Bank of Punjab Becomes First Provincial Bank To Get AAA Credit Rating

The Bank of Punjab has become the first provincial bank in Pakistan to receive a AAA long-term credit rating, marking a major milestone for the institution and the country’s banking sector.

The Pakistan Credit Rating Agency upgraded BOP’s long-term entity rating from AA+ to AAA, while maintaining its short-term rating at A1+. The outlook has been assigned as Stable.

The AAA rating is the highest credit rating on the national scale and reflects strong financial capacity, improved profitability, a solid deposit base and disciplined risk management.

According to the bank, its deposits have crossed Rs2 trillion, while operating profit increased sharply to Rs40.7 billion in 2025. The upgrade also reflects BOP’s expanding role in commercial banking, public-sector financing and financial inclusion.

BOP President and CEO Zafar Masud said the rating reflects the bank’s disciplined growth and stronger institutional position.

The bank has also been active in SME financing, agriculture, housing, women’s financial inclusion and Punjab government-backed financial schemes. Its management says the latest rating will further strengthen confidence among customers, investors and stakeholders.

The upgrade places BOP among the country’s top-rated financial institutions and highlights the growing importance of provincial banks in Pakistan’s financial system.
