Lahore: The Punjab government has clarified that all tuition centres in the province are not being closed. Officials have said the action is being taken against unregistered academies and tuition centres operating without required approval, registration, or building safety clearance.
The clarification came after reports and social media posts created confusion among parents, students, and academy owners that tuition centres across Punjab were being shut down completely.
According to the latest position, registered tuition centres and academies that meet safety and legal requirements are not the target of the crackdown. However, centres running without registration or operating from unsafe buildings may face closure.
The move follows recent incidents involving tuition centre buildings in Lahore, including the Kahna tragedy, where children lost their lives after a roof collapsed at a private tuition facility. The incident triggered serious concerns over the safety of students attending academies in residential or poorly maintained buildings.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has directed authorities to take action against unregistered academies and ensure that educational institutions obtain the required fitness certificates before operating.
Reports suggest that around 760 unregistered tuition academies in Lahore have been identified for action. Authorities have also directed academy owners to complete registration and obtain building fitness certificates from the relevant departments.
The government has said the purpose of the campaign is not to stop students from receiving tuition, but to ensure that children study in safe and legally approved buildings.
Parents have been advised to check whether a tuition centre is registered and whether its building is safe before enrolling their children. Academy owners have also been told to complete legal formalities to avoid sealing, fines, or other action.
The crackdown may also cover home-based tuition centres if they are being run commercially without permission or in buildings that do not meet safety standards.
Officials say the campaign is part of wider efforts to improve student safety across Punjab after recent building-related incidents raised questions over unchecked private academies and tuition centres.
Tuition centre and academy owners in Punjab should:
No. The government has clarified that all tuition centres are not being closed. Action is mainly focused on unregistered, illegal, and unsafe tuition centres.
