Pakistan will ban the manufacture, import and sale of conventional reusable syringes from January 1, 2027, in a nationwide move aimed at reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and other blood-borne infections.
The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan has directed manufacturers, importers and suppliers to shift to safety-engineered reuse-prevention syringes before the deadline. Conventional syringes will not be allowed in the market after December 31, 2026.
Officials say the decision is part of a broader public health effort to stop unsafe injection practices, including the reuse of syringes in clinics, hospitals and informal healthcare settings.
Under the new rules, only auto-disable or auto-lock syringes will be permitted for sale across the country. These syringes are designed to prevent reuse after a single injection.
The move is expected to affect medical suppliers, distributors and healthcare facilities, which will need to clear existing conventional syringe stocks and ensure compliance before the deadline.
Health experts have long warned that reused syringes can transmit serious infections, particularly in areas where infection-control practices are weak. Pakistan has previously faced HIV outbreaks linked to unsafe medical practices, making syringe safety a major concern for regulators.
The ban gives the healthcare sector several months to complete the transition. Authorities are expected to monitor supply chains and take action against non-compliant products once the restriction comes into force.
