Microsoft has launched its latest Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 processors, pushing its premium Windows-on-Arm lineup further into the AI PC market.
The new devices include the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8, both positioned as Copilot+ PCs with stronger on-device AI performance, improved graphics capability, and longer battery life claims. The launch continues Microsoft’s effort to make Arm-based Windows machines more competitive against traditional Intel-powered laptops and Apple’s MacBook lineup.
The Surface Pro 12 keeps Microsoft’s familiar 2-in-1 tablet design, offering a detachable keyboard experience for users who want a device that can work as both a tablet and laptop. The device is expected to appeal to professionals, students, and creators who need portability without moving away from full Windows apps.
The Surface Laptop 8 comes in 13.8-inch and 15-inch versions. Microsoft has kept the overall design close to previous Surface Laptop models, but the main upgrade is inside: Snapdragon X2 Plus and Snapdragon X2 Elite chip options. The company says these processors bring better AI acceleration, faster performance, and improved power efficiency.
Microsoft is also highlighting battery life as a major selling point. The Surface Pro is rated for up to 15.5 hours, while the Surface Laptop can reach up to 20 hours, depending on model and usage. These figures are likely to be important for users considering a shift from Intel-based Windows laptops to Arm-powered machines.
Pricing has also moved higher. The Surface Pro starts at around $1,499, while the Surface Laptop starts at around $1,599. Commercial versions are expected to follow later, with higher starting prices for business buyers.
Design changes are limited, but Microsoft has added new color options, including Dune for Surface Pro and Jade for Surface Laptop. The Surface Laptop continues to offer a premium touchscreen design, while select higher-end configurations are expected to provide better display and performance options.
The launch comes as Microsoft continues building its Copilot+ PC strategy around local AI processing. Snapdragon X2 chips are designed to handle AI tasks more efficiently on the device, reducing dependence on cloud processing for some features.
However, the higher prices may become a key factor for buyers. While the new Surface models offer stronger AI and battery performance, Microsoft will need to convince users that the upgrades justify the premium pricing.
For now, the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop show that Microsoft remains committed to Windows-on-Arm as a major part of its hardware future.
