OpenAI has announced it will retire several of its widely used AI models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and o4-mini, on 13 February 2026, as the company continues its transition toward GPT-5.2.
The decision also affects GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking. OpenAI confirmed the move in a support document, stating that no immediate changes will be made to its API.
According to the company, GPT-5.2 has now reached a level of performance and adoption that makes continued support for older models unnecessary.
GPT-4o gained recognition for its more conversational and expressive interaction style. The model developed a dedicated user base, particularly among Plus and Pro subscribers, who cited its usefulness for creative ideation and informal dialogue.
OpenAI previously reinstated GPT-4o following user feedback after an earlier retirement, acknowledging that some users required additional time to transition away from the model.
"We brought GPT-4o back after hearing clear feedback from a subset of Plus and Pro users, who told us they needed more time to transition key use cases,” OpenAI said.
OpenAI stated that usage has since shifted significantly, with only 0.1% of daily users continuing to select GPT-4o. The company said this trend supports its decision to consolidate around GPT-5.2.
While GPT-4o was known for its less restricted conversational tone, GPT-5.2 adopts a more cautious approach, prioritising reliability and safety.
The retirement coincides with the rollout of ChatGPT’s Personality feature, which allows users to customise conversational tone and behaviour. OpenAI said this feature is intended to replicate aspects of GPT-4o’s appeal while maintaining stronger safeguards.
The company added that consolidating models will help ensure consistency and security across the platform.
OpenAI said user feedback from GPT-4o played a key role in shaping GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2. The company described the retirement as part of a broader strategy rather than a removal of valued capabilities.
The retirement of GPT-4o and related models is scheduled for 13 February 2026. OpenAI has encouraged users to explore GPT-5.2 and new personalisation options as the transition continues.
