Anthropic Disables Top AI Models After US Restricts Foreign Access

Anthropic has disabled access to its advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after a US government directive restricted foreign nationals from using the systems.

The company said the order was issued under national security authorities and applies to foreign nationals both inside and outside the United States, including some Anthropic employees. Because Anthropic could not reliably separate affected users from others in real time, the company moved to suspend access more broadly.

The restrictions reportedly followed concerns that Fable 5 could be bypassed through a jailbreak, potentially allowing users to access sensitive cybersecurity capabilities. Anthropic has disputed the scale of the risk, saying the issue was limited and not unique to its models.

The decision has caused disruption for developers, companies and research users who had recently gained access to the new Claude models. It has also renewed debate over how governments should regulate frontier AI systems without cutting off legitimate users.

The case highlights a growing tension in the AI industry: advanced models are becoming powerful enough to raise national security concerns, while businesses and researchers increasingly depend on them for software, automation and analysis.
