PPP and PML-N Discuss Formula to Form Gilgit-Baltistan Govt

GILGIT: The PPP and PML-N have started discussions on a possible power-sharing formula to form the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan following the June 7 assembly elections.

According to political sources, the talks are focused on the distribution of key positions, including the chief minister’s office, speaker and deputy speaker slots, cabinet portfolios and future cooperation in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.

PPP has emerged as the leading party in unofficial results, while PML-N has also secured important seats and remains a key player in the government-formation process. Independent candidates are also expected to play a decisive role as parties work to secure a comfortable majority in the assembly.

Party insiders said PPP wants to lead the new government, citing its position in the election results. However, discussions with PML-N are being considered to ensure political stability and avoid a fragile administration in the region.

The possible formula may include PPP taking the chief ministership, while PML-N could be offered senior cabinet positions or constitutional offices in the assembly. No final decision has been announced so far.

The matter is also linked to the broader political understanding between PPP and PML-N at the federal level. Both parties have worked together in national politics, and their cooperation in Gilgit-Baltistan could help them maintain a working relationship in the region.

However, some PPP leaders are reportedly in favour of forming the government without PML-N if the party can secure support from independent members. Others believe a coalition would provide a more stable setup, especially as the new government will face major challenges related to development, governance, tourism, infrastructure and public services.

PML-N leaders, meanwhile, are expected to push for a meaningful share in the new setup if they join the government. The party’s regional leadership has maintained that its mandate should be respected in any power-sharing arrangement.

The final decision is likely to be made after consultations with the central leadership of both parties. The role of independent winners and reserved seats will also be important in determining the final numbers in the assembly.

A formal announcement on the government formation is expected once both parties complete internal consultations and agree on a workable arrangement.
