ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has signed the historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as mediator between the United States and Iran, marking a major diplomatic development in efforts to reduce regional tensions.
The agreement was electronically signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while PM Shehbaz endorsed it in his role as mediator.
According to reports, the agreement aims to end hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ease restrictions linked to Iranian oil exports, and begin further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme.
PM Shehbaz called the development a major step toward diplomacy, saying the signing showed both sides’ commitment to a negotiated resolution of the conflict.
Pakistan’s role in facilitating the agreement has placed Islamabad at the centre of renewed international diplomacy between Washington and Tehran. The development also comes at a sensitive time for the wider Middle East, where tensions have affected security, energy markets, and global shipping routes.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. Any progress toward reopening and stabilising the passage is expected to draw close attention from global markets and regional governments.
Officials and analysts are now watching how both sides implement the terms of the MoU. The next phase of talks is expected to determine whether the agreement can lead to a broader and more durable settlement.
