ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has suspended Geo News’ broadcast licence for 15 days over content aired during a Muharram-related programme.
According to the regulator, the broadcast carried religious imagery that PEMRA said was inconsistent with Pakistan’s religious, social and cultural values. The authority said the matter would now be reviewed further by its Complaints Council.
PEMRA said the council would hold additional hearings before making recommendations on whether any further regulatory action should be taken.
The regulator also said it would examine the circumstances that led to the broadcast and determine who was responsible for allowing the content to go on air.
The suspension comes during Muharram, a period marked by heightened religious sensitivity across the country. Authorities usually increase monitoring, security arrangements and public-safety measures during processions, majalis and other religious gatherings.
Geo News will remain off air for 15 days under the suspension order. Further action, if any, will depend on the findings and recommendations of PEMRA’s Complaints Council.
