Mobile phone services are being suspended in selected areas of Pakistan as part of security arrangements for Muharram processions, officials said, with restrictions expected around sensitive routes and major mourning gatherings.
The move is being taken as a precautionary security measure for 9th and 10th Muharram, when large processions and majalis are held across the country. Authorities said any decision on service suspension would be coordinated with provincial governments and local administrations, depending on the security situation in each area.
Muharram 1448 AH began in Pakistan on June 17, 2026, while Youm-e-Ashura will be observed on Friday, June 26, 2026. Security has been tightened nationwide ahead of Ashura, with police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies deployed in major cities and sensitive districts.
According to officials, mobile phone and internet restrictions will not be imposed uniformly across the country. Instead, services may be suspended in selected locations, including procession routes, imambargahs, sensitive neighborhoods and areas identified by security agencies.
The restrictions are expected to affect voice calls, mobile data, social media access, ride-hailing services, online banking and app-based deliveries in affected areas. Citizens have been advised to plan travel in advance, keep emergency contacts available offline and follow local traffic updates during procession hours.
Security plans also include route clearance, CCTV monitoring, walk-through gates, rooftop deployment, traffic diversions and checking of vehicles near procession routes. Provincial home departments are coordinating with district administrations to finalize timings and locations for any temporary shutdowns.
Authorities usually suspend mobile services during high-risk religious gatherings to prevent the possible use of mobile networks for unlawful coordination or remote-triggered devices. Officials say the measure is aimed at protecting mourners and maintaining public order during Muharram observances.
In major cities, traffic police are also issuing alternative route plans as several roads are expected to remain closed during processions. Hospitals and rescue services have been placed on alert, while emergency teams will remain deployed near main mourning routes.
Citizens living near procession areas may face temporary disruption in communication services. Officials have urged the public to cooperate with security personnel and avoid spreading unverified reports about road closures, mobile outages or security incidents.
The final timing and scope of service suspension will depend on local security assessments. Services are expected to be restored once processions conclude and clearance is given by the relevant authorities.
