LAHORE: Beaconhouse National University has launched Pakistan’s first documented institutional framework aimed at creating a drug-free and psychologically supportive campus environment.
The initiative includes two manuals titled “From Risk to Resilience: BNU Substance Use Control Program” and “Campus Care: A Guide to Psychological First Aid.”
The launch ceremony was attended by Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Provincial Minister for School and Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat, vice chancellors, Anti-Narcotics Force officials, senior government representatives, and mental health experts.
BNU Vice Chancellor Dr Moeed Yusuf said the framework is based on the university’s practical experience and focuses on prevention, early support, rehabilitation, and student wellbeing.
Unlike conventional anti-drug campaigns, the model places emphasis on empathy, psychological assistance, and structured intervention rather than relying only on punishment.
The manuals guide universities on identifying at-risk students, improving referral systems, training faculty and staff, strengthening counselling services, and engaging students through awareness drives, peer support, sports, arts, and extracurricular activities.
The Psychological First Aid guide is designed to help teachers, staff, and student leaders recognise signs of emotional distress and refer students for professional support where needed.
Officials said the framework could help other universities develop safer campuses while addressing substance use and mental health challenges together.
