Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held his first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday morning at the Oval Office in Washington. The high-level talks focused on regional security, counterterrorism cooperation, and strengthening bilateral relations, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

PM Shehbaz was joined by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, while Trump was accompanied by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Key Discussions: Security and Counterterrorism

During the Oval Office discussions, President Donald Trump formally acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions to global counterterrorism efforts, a gesture that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warmly received. The premier highlighted the need to deepen security cooperation and intelligence sharing between Islamabad and Washington, calling it vital for regional stability. He also described Trump as a “man of peace,” referencing his timely intervention during the India–Pakistan conflict in May, which reportedly played a critical role in de-escalating tensions and preventing a broader military confrontation in South Asia.

Gaza Peace & Middle East Diplomacy

On broader international affairs, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended Donald Trump’s recent diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. He specifically praised the former president’s initiative to host a high-level summit with Muslim leaders in New York, which focused on finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the West Bank. Shehbaz described Trump’s role in advocating for an immediate ceasefire as both “sincere” and “commendable,” adding that such efforts reflect strong leadership during a time of regional instability.

Trade, Investment & Economic Relations

The leaders also discussed recent developments in Pakistan-US trade, including a new tariff agreement. PM Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s economic potential, inviting American companies to invest in sectors like agriculture, IT, minerals, and energy.

He expressed hope for “a new era of economic diplomacy” under Trump’s leadership.

Diplomatic Gesture

PM Shehbaz extended a formal invitation to Trump to visit Pakistan, signalling a desire to deepen strategic relations and people-to-people ties.
