U.S. President Donald Trump has told Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, that another Israeli airstrike on Qatari land will not happen again. This comes after a shocking Israeli attack in Doha that targeted leaders of Hamas, a Palestinian group.
The airstrike happened in the Leqtaifiya area of Doha. It hit a residential building where top Hamas officials were believed to be staying. The strike killed several people, including some Hamas members and a Qatari security officer. Most senior Hamas leaders survived. Qatar strongly condemned the attack, calling it a violation of its sovereignty.
After the incident, President Trump called the Qatari Prime Minister. According to the White House, Trump said the attack was “unfortunate” and gave his assurance that it would not be repeated. He also emphasized that the United States values its close relationship with Qatar.
It was later revealed that the U.S. was informed about the planned Israeli strike a few hours before it happened. Trump then told one of his aides, Steven Witkoff, to warn Qatar. However, the warning came too late to stop the attack. This raised concerns about coordination between the U.S., Israel, and Qatar especially since Qatar is currently hosting talks to help end the war in Gaza.
An unnamed Qatari official said, “We are hosting peace talks. This kind of action puts everything at risk. Allies should respect each other.”
Israel defended its actions, saying it was targeting “terrorists responsible for attacks on Israeli citizens.” However, many believe the timing of the strike while peace negotiations are ongoing could hurt diplomatic efforts.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) also expressed concern and called on Israel to show restraint. Arab leaders are now considering an emergency meeting to discuss next steps.
President Trump’s promise is meant to ease tensions and keep peace efforts on track. Whether this will be enough remains to be seen, as the region watches closely.
