SpaceX has agreed to acquire Anysphere, the company behind the AI coding platform Cursor, in a $60 billion all-stock deal, marking one of the biggest technology acquisitions in the artificial intelligence sector.
The deal has also drawn attention in Pakistan because Cursor was co-founded by Sualeh Asif, a Pakistan-born entrepreneur originally from Karachi. Asif is among the young founders behind Anysphere, the startup that built Cursor into one of the fastest-growing AI coding tools used by developers and companies worldwide.
According to current reports, the acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. The transaction will be completed through SpaceX shares rather than cash.
Cursor has gained rapid popularity among software developers by helping them write, edit and improve code using artificial intelligence. The platform is part of a fast-growing group of AI coding assistants that are changing how engineers build software, automate development tasks and manage large codebases.
For SpaceX, the acquisition is being seen as a major move beyond rockets, satellites and space infrastructure. The deal gives the company deeper access to AI-powered software development tools at a time when technology firms are racing to strengthen coding automation, enterprise AI systems and developer productivity platforms.
The acquisition also highlights the growing role of Pakistani-origin talent in global technology. Asif’s rise from Karachi to co-founding a Silicon Valley AI company reflects the increasing presence of Pakistani engineers and entrepreneurs in major international startups.
Industry observers say the deal could strengthen SpaceX’s AI capabilities by combining Cursor’s software tools with SpaceX’s large-scale computing, engineering and infrastructure resources. The purchase also signals how valuable AI coding platforms have become as businesses look for faster and more efficient ways to build software.
The $60 billion valuation places Anysphere among the most valuable AI startups to be acquired. It also underlines the increasing investor and corporate interest in AI tools that can support developers, automate coding workflows and improve productivity across large organizations.
For Pakistan’s tech community, the deal is a high-profile moment. It shows how locally rooted talent can play a role in building global companies at the center of the AI boom.
