The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province as part of security arrangements for Muharram, placing restrictions on processions, gatherings, weapons, and activities that could disturb public order.
The restrictions have been introduced to maintain peace during Muharram, particularly around processions and majalis held across the province. Authorities said the measures are aimed at preventing sectarian tension, ensuring public safety, and supporting law enforcement agencies during sensitive days.
Under the rules, no new procession or majlis will be allowed without prior permission from the district administration. Organisers have also been directed not to change approved routes, timings, or arrangements without official approval.
The display and carrying of weapons, explosive material, and other dangerous items have been banned under Section 144. Authorities have also prohibited inflammatory speeches, hate slogans, wall chalking, and the distribution of sectarian material.
Security has been tightened around imambargahs, procession routes, and other sensitive locations. Police and district administrations have been directed to ensure strict monitoring of all Muharram-related activities.
According to the security plan, processions will be monitored through CCTV cameras, walk-through gates, metal detectors, and physical checking. Female police personnel will also be deployed for checking women mourners.
Parking areas will be kept away from procession routes and majalis venues to reduce security risks. Law enforcement agencies have also been instructed to coordinate with organisers and local peace committees.
Pillion riding restrictions are also expected on the 9th and 10th of Muharram in sensitive areas. Exemptions are likely to apply to women, senior citizens, children, journalists, and law enforcement personnel, depending on district-level notifications.
The Punjab government has directed citizens and organisers to cooperate with police and district administrations. Officials said strict action will be taken against anyone violating the restrictions or attempting to create unrest during Muharram.
Authorities have urged people to report suspicious activity and follow official instructions during processions and gatherings.
