In a bid to boost domestic tourism and offer families a budget-friendly weekend escape, the Punjab government has launched a special double-decker bus service between Lahore and Sheikhupura. This weekend-only initiative, led by the Punjab Tourism Development Corporation (TDCP), aims to make historic and cultural landmarks more accessible to the public.
The service was inaugurated with enthusiasm and is now operational every Saturday and Sunday, providing a scenic journey to some of the region’s most iconic destinations. With its open-top design and vibrant red exterior, the bus adds a modern touch to Punjab’s heritage travel experience.
The newly launched route takes passengers from Lahore to key tourist attractions in Sheikhupura, including the famous Hiran Minar and the shrine of Sufi poet Waris Shah. These sites offer both historical significance and picturesque surroundings, making them ideal for family outings and educational trips.
The fare for a full round-trip is set at Rs. 1,200, making it a cost-effective option for weekend leisure. The service is especially popular among students and families seeking a short break from city life. Passengers can enjoy panoramic views from the upper deck, enhancing the travel experience.
This double-decker service is more than just a sightseeing opportunity. It is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate local economies and promote cultural heritage. By directing foot traffic toward lesser-explored locations, the initiative is giving small vendors, artisans, and food stalls near these tourist spots a new source of income.
Local business owners have responded positively, noting a noticeable increase in visitors. For many, this initiative is a “revival of regional heritage” that had long been overshadowed by urban development.
Tourists benefit from a structured and safe travel option, without the hassle of planning transportation or routes. For locals, especially in Sheikhupura, the added visibility and economic activity are much welcomed.
Government officials have indicated that this is just the beginning. If the response remains positive, similar services could be introduced across other regions of Punjab. Cities rich in heritage but low on tourist footfall could be next in line for this transport-tourism model.
By combining convenience, culture, and affordability, Punjab’s weekend double-decker bus service is setting a new standard for local tourism. It offers a refreshing way to reconnect with history while supporting community livelihoods — one scenic ride at a time.
