Punjab Chief Minister has cancelled all Basant-related engagements after a bomb blast at a mosque in Islamabad killed at least 31 people, officials said on Monday. The decision was taken following serious security concerns after the deadly attack in the federal capital.
Police said the blast occurred during prayers at a mosque in the Tarlai area of Islamabad, causing panic and heavy casualties. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and moved the injured to nearby hospitals. Several people are reported to be in critical condition, and authorities said the death toll may increase.
Security forces sealed off the area soon after the explosion and launched an investigation. Evidence is being collected from the site, while intelligence agencies are assisting police in the probe. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
In the wake of the Islamabad tragedy, I am cancelling all my Basant-related activities that were scheduled for tomorrow. The mega Basant show at the Liberty Square also stands cancelled.

After the incident, high-level meetings were held to review the security situation. Officials said large public gatherings could be risky under the current circumstances. In response, the Punjab Chief Minister cancelled all Basant-related engagements and activities planned in the coming days.
An official statement said the decision reflects concern for public safety and solidarity with the victims. “This is not a time for celebrations. Our priority is peace and security,” the statement said.
Basant, a traditional kite-flying festival, has faced restrictions in the past due to safety and security issues. While limited activities were being considered this year, officials said the Islamabad blast made such plans impossible.
Security has been tightened in Islamabad and Punjab, and authorities said further decisions on public events will depend on the law and order situation.
