Pakistan’s first-ever Explosive Detection System (EDS) has been inaugurated at the cargo terminal of Sialkot International Airport (SIAL), marking a significant step forward for the country’s aviation and export sectors. The advanced screening system is expected to strengthen cargo security, improve operational efficiency, and help Pakistani exporters meet international compliance requirements.
The EDS facility was formally inaugurated by SIAL Chairman Hassan Ali Bhatti and Export Development Fund (EDF) Chairman Omer Saeed during a ceremony attended by airport officials, board members, and industry stakeholders.
According to airport officials, the newly installed system can scan up to 1,800 bags per hour, significantly increasing cargo processing capacity while maintaining higher security standards. The technology is designed to speed up export shipments and ensure compliance with international aviation security protocols.
Speaking at the inauguration, Hassan Ali Bhatti described the installation as a major achievement for Sialkot International Airport and highlighted the longstanding collaboration between SIAL and the Export Development Fund. He said the project reflects a shared commitment to supporting Pakistan’s export sector through modern infrastructure and enhanced security measures.
EDF Chairman Omer Saeed said the system would benefit exporters by streamlining cargo handling and reinforcing Sialkot’s position as one of Pakistan’s leading export hubs. He noted that the city is internationally recognized for products such as sports goods, surgical instruments, and other export-oriented manufacturing.
Sialkot International Airport, which plays a key role in handling export cargo from the region, is expected to further strengthen its cargo operations through the addition of the EDS technology. Industry observers believe the move will increase confidence among international airlines, logistics providers, and overseas buyers by ensuring higher levels of cargo security and operational reliability.
The inauguration of the EDS system represents an important milestone in the modernization of Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure and signals continued efforts to align cargo operations with global best practices.
