ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority has warned of rain, thunderstorms and possible flood risks in parts of Pakistan during the first week of Muharram, urging citizens and local administrations to remain alert as unstable weather conditions continue in several regions.
The warning comes as Muharram 1448 AH begins in Pakistan on Wednesday, June 17, while Ashura will be observed on Friday, June 26. Weather activity during the opening days of the month may affect travel, public gatherings and local arrangements in vulnerable areas.
According to the latest weather outlook, rain-thunderstorm activity is expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, Islamabad and northeast Balochistan from June 17 to June 19. Hot and dry weather is likely to continue in most other parts of the country.
NDMA has advised provincial and district authorities to monitor low-lying areas, hill torrents, nullahs and landslide-prone locations. The authority also warned that heavy rain in mountainous and upper regions could increase the risk of flash flooding, landslides and disruption to road links.
Urban centres may also face water accumulation if short but intense rain spells hit major cities. Citizens have been asked to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rain, stay away from electric poles and weak structures, and follow instructions issued by local administrations.
The advisory is particularly important for areas hosting Muharram processions and majalis, where crowd management and emergency response plans may need weather-related adjustments. Organisers have been urged to coordinate with local authorities and keep alternative arrangements ready in case of rain or strong winds.
Officials have also cautioned tourists and travellers heading to northern areas to check weather updates before departure. Sudden weather changes in mountainous areas can cause landslides, road closures and dangerous water flows in streams and rivers.
Emergency services, municipal bodies and disaster response teams have been asked to remain prepared for possible rescue and drainage operations. Authorities may issue local alerts if rainfall intensity increases in high-risk districts.
The public has been advised to keep emergency contact numbers available, avoid crossing flooded roads or streams, secure loose outdoor items, and report dangerous situations to local rescue services.
