The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert warning of thunderstorms, windstorms, and dust storms expected to impact multiple regions of Pakistan, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Islamabad. This advisory comes amid shifting seasonal weather patterns and the arrival of westerly disturbances from the west.
The NDMA, citing data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), stated that isolated showers, strong gusty winds, and dust storms are likely to develop across parts of central and northern Punjab, upper KP, and the Islamabad Capital Territory over the next 12 to 36 hours. The most affected areas may include Lahore, Sialkot, Chakwal, Mianwali, Attock, and Jhelum, as well as Peshawar, Abbottabad, and surrounding KP districts.
Weather models indicate that the intensity of the storm system may vary across districts, with the possibility of cloudbursts, lightning strikes, and reduced visibility due to suspended dust particles in the air.
In a public notice, the NDMA emphasized the need for heightened preparedness across vulnerable zones. Citizens are urged to:
Avoid unnecessary travel during storm periods
Secure outdoor objects like tents, hoardings, or tools
Remain indoors during high wind activity
Stay updated through official weather bulletins
Local administrations and emergency services have been advised to remain on alert and to activate contingency plans in districts with a higher likelihood of weather disruption.
According to meteorologists, the current conditions are typical of pre-monsoon turbulence where hot temperatures clash with incoming cold westerly winds, triggering instability in the upper atmosphere. Such systems are known to bring erratic and localized weather disturbances.
Past events—including the April 2023 hailstorms that caused major agricultural losses—have reinforced the importance of quick response and public awareness during such alerts.
Here are safety tips recommended by NDMA and PMD:
Do not take shelter under trees during lightning activity
Keep electronics unplugged during storms
Farmers should reinforce weak structures and protect livestock
Motorcyclists and pedestrians should avoid open areas during dust storms

As weather systems continue to evolve rapidly, the NDMA's advisory serves as a crucial reminder for citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize safety. Authorities have committed to closely monitoring the situation and updating the public as conditions unfold.
