The National Disaster Management Authority has advised citizens and local administrations to remain alert as pre-monsoon rains are expected to continue in different parts of Pakistan until July 3.
According to the advisory, intermittent rain, wind and thunderstorms may affect several regions during the current spell. The warning comes as rising temperatures and expected rainfall increase the risk of flash floods, landslides and glacial lake outburst floods in northern and mountainous areas.
The NDMA said vulnerable regions in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir require close monitoring because heat and rainfall can accelerate glacier melting. Sudden increases in water flow may affect streams, rivers and low-lying settlements near glacier-fed valleys.
Authorities have also been advised to stay prepared for possible urban flooding in poorly drained areas if heavy downpours occur over a short period. Emergency teams have been directed to monitor weather conditions, clear drainage points and keep response resources ready in at-risk districts.
Residents and tourists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams, nullahs, steep slopes and glacial lakes. The NDMA also asked people in mountainous areas to report unusual signs such as a sudden rise in water level, changes in water colour or loud sounds from glaciers.
The advisory is particularly important for travellers heading towards northern Pakistan during the holiday and summer tourism season. Road closures, landslides and temporary blockages may occur in hilly areas during heavy rain.
Citizens have been told to follow official weather updates and safety instructions from disaster management authorities. The NDMA also encouraged the public to use official alert systems for timely information on changing weather and possible hazards.
Local administrations and provincial disaster management authorities are expected to maintain round-the-clock monitoring until the current pre-monsoon spell weakens after July 3.
