ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed the Finance Bill 2026-27 with amendments after a prolonged debate on the federal budget, clearing a key stage in Pakistan’s budget approval process.
The bill was approved after clause-by-clause consideration in the lower house, where treasury members supported the government’s fiscal proposals while opposition lawmakers continued to criticize several tax and policy measures.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented the bill as part of the government’s plan for the new fiscal year, with the budget focused on revenue generation, economic stability, and meeting fiscal targets.
The session saw noisy exchanges as opposition members raised objections to different budgetary proposals. Government lawmakers defended the bill, saying the measures were necessary to maintain fiscal discipline and support economic recovery.
According to officials, several amendments were incorporated before approval, including changes linked to tax proposals and recommendations reviewed during the parliamentary process.
The passage of the Finance Bill now moves the federal budget closer to implementation from July 1, subject to completion of the remaining constitutional and procedural steps.
The government has argued that the budget is designed to balance revenue needs with economic growth, while critics say new tax measures may increase pressure on businesses and households.
The Finance Bill remains one of the most important annual legislative items, as it gives legal effect to taxation and revenue measures announced in the federal budget.
