Pakistan’s National Assembly has approved the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27, clearing the Finance Bill with amendments after a heated session marked by opposition protests.
The approved budget carries a total outlay of around Rs18.77 trillion and will take effect from July 1, 2026. The Finance Bill includes revised duties, tax adjustments, enforcement measures, and changes linked to the government’s broader fiscal reform plan.
Lawmakers passed the bill after the treasury secured support from coalition partners. Opposition members objected to several measures and moved amendments, but the government pushed the bill through with majority backing.
Key changes in the approved budget include revisions in customs and tax duties, updated measures for digital and property-related transactions, and stricter tax enforcement provisions. The government says the measures are aimed at widening the tax net, improving revenue collection, and meeting fiscal targets.
The budget also comes as Pakistan continues efforts to stabilize the economy under IMF-backed reforms. Officials have projected improved growth and lower inflation in the new fiscal year, while businesses and households will now assess how revised duties and tax measures affect prices, imports, salaries, and investment decisions.
The passage of the Finance Bill formally completes the budget approval process in the lower house, allowing the government to implement its fiscal plan for 2026-27.
