Meta Platforms faced a major worldwide service disruption on Friday, leaving thousands of users unable to properly access Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.
The outage affected both regular users and business accounts, with people reporting login failures, blank feeds, message delivery problems and app-loading errors across multiple regions. The disruption appeared to hit Meta’s main consumer platforms as well as some of its business tools.
Outage-tracking reports showed a sharp spike in complaints during the disruption. Facebook appeared to be among the most affected services, while Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp users also reported problems with core features.
For many users, the apps either failed to load or displayed error messages. Others said they were logged out unexpectedly, could not refresh feeds, or were unable to send and receive messages. The problems were reported on both mobile apps and desktop versions.
Meta’s business products were also affected during the outage. Services linked to advertising, messaging and business communication saw interruptions, including tools used by advertisers, brands and companies that depend on Meta platforms for customer support and marketing.
The disruption caused concern for businesses that rely on Facebook Ads Manager, Instagram messaging tools and WhatsApp Business services to reach customers. Even a short outage can affect ad campaigns, customer conversations and online sales activity, especially for small businesses using Meta apps as their main digital storefront.
Meta later indicated that services were beginning to return, although some users continued to face temporary issues while systems recovered. By Saturday, monitoring platforms showed Meta services largely operational again, suggesting the major disruption had been resolved.
The company did not immediately provide a detailed public explanation for the cause of the outage.
Meta’s platforms are deeply connected to daily communication, news sharing, online business and social interaction worldwide. When Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or WhatsApp go down together, the impact is felt quickly by users, creators, advertisers and companies across different countries.
The incident again highlighted how heavily people and businesses depend on a small number of major digital platforms for communication and commerce.
