Lionel Messi scored, cried, broke the internet, and somehow still had time to casually drop a hat-trick. Just a normal day at the office for a man who apparently treats World Cup matches like emotional group therapy with goals.
Messi was seen wiping away tears after scoring for Argentina in their 3-0 win over Algeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener at Kansas City Stadium. Of course, the Argentina captain did not stop there. He went on to score three goals, because apparently crying and destroying defenders can happen in the same 90 minutes.
After the match, Messi said his tears were not related to football. He explained that he had gone through “difficult days,” but did not share more details. Naturally, the internet responded with calm, maturity and respect.
Just kidding.
Within minutes, social media turned into a full-time detective agency. Fans were pausing clips, zooming in on facial expressions, writing emotional essays, making memes, and acting like they had personally been briefed by the Messi family over breakfast.
Some fans were genuinely concerned and sent messages of support. Others started guessing what was wrong, because apparently privacy is just a decorative word online.
The reaction grew even louder after rumors about Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, started spreading. Messi’s family later said Jorge was receiving care and recovering, while also asking people not to spread unverified claims. A very reasonable request, which the internet will hopefully remember for at least six minutes.
Still, the moment showed a different side of Messi. For more than two decades, fans have watched him score impossible goals, win huge trophies and carry the expectations of an entire football nation. But seeing him cry during a match reminded everyone that even legends have personal struggles away from the pitch.
And yet, while everyone was emotionally spiraling online, Messi was busy making history.
His hat-trick helped Argentina begin their title defence with a strong 3-0 win. The performance also moved him level with Miroslav Klose on the men’s World Cup goalscoring record, because apparently one viral emotional moment was not dramatic enough for the evening.
Argentina looked confident from start to finish, with Messi once again controlling the game like he had the remote and everyone else was just waiting for permission to move. His finishing was sharp, his movement was dangerous, and his presence gave Argentina exactly the start they wanted.
But, obviously, the tears became the main headline.
Fans flooded timelines with reactions, ranging from heartfelt support to Olympic-level overthinking. Some called the moment beautiful. Others called it heartbreaking. A few people probably started a 47-post thread explaining Messi’s emotional state based on the angle of his left eyebrow.
Messi has not shared further personal details, and his family has made it clear that privacy matters. For now, the confirmed story is simple: Messi cried, said it was personal, scored a hat-trick, helped Argentina win, and left the internet completely unable to behave normally.
So yes, it was emotional. It was historic. It was very Messi.
And the internet, as expected, had absolutely no chill.

Pakistan’s Sialkot to Make FIFA World Cup 2026 Ball
Hey, I'm Hassan,
who somehow ended up writing about football and world news instead of touching grass. I built RozUpdates because I wanted a place where things actually make sense — no boring headlines, no copy-paste journalism.
I write about whatever is worth talking about. Football, tech, what's happening in the world, the meme your cousin just sent you on WhatsApp — if it matters, it ends up here.
Fair warning: I have opinions and I'm not afraid to use them.
Stick around. It gets better.
