Italy has returned seven historic artefacts to Pakistan after their recovery by Italian authorities, marking another step in Islamabad’s efforts to bring back cultural heritage items taken out of the country illegally.
The artefacts are linked to Pakistan’s ancient Kuli and Naal heritage, associated with prehistoric sites in Balochistan. Officials describe the recovered pieces as part of a heritage tradition dating back thousands of years.
According to Pakistani authorities, the return was made possible through cooperation between Pakistan’s diplomatic missions and Italian authorities involved in the recovery and handover process. Pakistan has thanked Italy for its role in helping protect and repatriate the country’s cultural property.
Officials did not release individual names or catalogue numbers for the seven artefacts. However, the recovered items were identified as prehistoric objects connected to Pakistan’s ancient cultural heritage.
The latest return adds to a wider recovery effort. Over the past 18 years, nearly 100 stolen artefacts linked to Pakistan have reportedly been seized and handed back through cooperation with Italian authorities.
The Kuli and Naal cultures are considered important to the study of early settlements in the region. Artefacts connected to these traditions help researchers understand ancient craft, settlement patterns and cultural development in what is now Balochistan.
The recovery also highlights the continuing challenge of illegal antiquities trafficking. Pakistan has repeatedly called for stronger international cooperation to trace, recover and return cultural objects removed from archaeological sites.
Officials say the return of the seven artefacts reflects growing coordination between Pakistan and Italy in the protection of cultural heritage. The move is also expected to support Pakistan’s broader efforts to preserve its archaeological record and discourage the illicit trade of historical objects.
