Israel’s recent airstrike in Doha, which killed top Hamas officials and a Qatari guard, has drawn sharp global criticism and sparked fresh questions over former U.S. President Donald Trump’s diplomatic command, especially after the White House admitted being “caught off guard.”
The strike, which targeted a Hamas leadership apartment during U.S.-backed ceasefire talks in Qatar, occurred on September 9. It sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles, given Qatar’s strategic role as both a U.S. ally and mediator in ongoing Israel-Hamas negotiations.
While President Trump later condemned the timing of the attack, calling it “unwise” and “not aligned with U.S. interests,” critics say the damage to his international standing is already done. “This undermines years of peacebuilding and places doubt on America’s reliability,” said a senior Gulf official speaking anonymously to Reuters.
The Trump administration confirmed that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff was instructed to warn Qatari authorities of the impending strike. However, sources claim the alert came too late to evacuate the targeted individuals, sparking outrage from Qatari officials who called the operation a “violation of national sovereignty.”
“This was not a coordinated move. It’s clear Israel acted independently,” Trump said during a press conference on Tuesday. However, analysts argue the incident paints a broader picture of weakened U.S. control over its closest allies, especially in the Middle East.
The Biden campaign quickly seized the moment, accusing Trump of “failing to manage foreign policy crises” and jeopardizing regional stability. “This is what happens when diplomacy takes a backseat to ego,” said spokesperson Lila Santos.
Internationally, the United Nations, European Union, and several Gulf nations condemned the attack, urging restraint and warning of escalating regional tensions.
For Trump, who has campaigned heavily on promises of peace in the Middle East and brokering successful hostage releases, the timing could not be worse. With elections looming and U.S. foreign credibility under scrutiny, critics say this event may haunt his global image long after the immediate headlines fade.
