The federal government has directed authorities to speed up the rollout of cashless electronic toll collection on major motorways and highways as part of a broader plan to modernize Pakistan’s road transport system.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has instructed the relevant departments to move quickly on Intelligent Transportation Systems, commonly known as ITS, with a focus on free-flow tolling, better traffic monitoring, and improved security infrastructure.
Under the proposed system, commuters would be able to pass through toll points without stopping for manual cash payments. The move is expected to reduce long queues at toll plazas, improve travel time, and make revenue collection more transparent.
The government also wants cameras, communication networks, traffic control systems, and security monitoring to be integrated under one digital framework. The M2 Motorway has been highlighted for immediate inclusion in the ITS programme.
Officials believe the shift to electronic tolling will help manage increasing traffic pressure on major routes and support smoother movement of passengers and commercial vehicles.
However, the success of the system will depend on public awareness, payment access, vehicle registration integration, and reliable digital infrastructure across motorway routes.
For motorists, the change could mark a major shift from traditional toll booths to a faster, technology-driven travel experience.
