The federal government is expected to announce a hike in petrol and diesel prices later this week, with the revised rates likely to take effect from September 16, 2025. According to official sources, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has submitted its fortnightly price summary to the Ministry of Finance, recommending an upward revision based on global oil trends and exchange rate fluctuations.
The final decision will be made by the Prime Minister after reviewing the proposed rates. If approved, this would mark another increase in petroleum product prices as part of the ongoing fortnightly review mechanism.
As per preliminary estimates, petrol prices may rise by Rs 9–11 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) could see an increase of Rs 12–14 per litre. Currently, petrol is being sold at Rs 305.36 per litre, and HSD stands at Rs 311.84 per litre. The new prices, once notified, will remain applicable for the next 15 days.
The proposed hike is largely attributed to the recent surge in international crude oil prices, which have been rising steadily due to geopolitical tensions and tightening global supply. In addition, the depreciation of the Pakistani Rupee (PKR) against the US Dollar has made fuel imports more expensive, putting further pressure on domestic prices.
Economic analysts warn that another fuel price hike could lead to a fresh wave of inflation, especially affecting transportation and daily commodity prices. Public transport operators have already hinted at possible fare revisions if diesel prices continue to climb.
The general public has expressed concern over the continuous increase in fuel rates, citing growing financial pressure on households already struggling with high inflation. Many fear that the rising fuel costs will further erode their purchasing power and contribute to an increase in essential goods prices.
No official comment has been made yet by the Ministry of Finance or OGRA. The final notification is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours, once it receives formal approval from the Prime Minister’s Office.
