The federal government has decided to end the fuel subsidy scheme that was providing relief to motorcyclists, public transport operators, freight transporters and farmers.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the National Steering Committee on fuel subsidies, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. The committee reviewed the progress of the scheme before deciding to discontinue the relief.
The subsidy had been introduced to reduce the impact of higher fuel prices on daily commuters, transport operators and farmers. It covered groups directly affected by rising petrol and diesel costs, including motorcycle owners, public transport services and goods transport operators.
Earlier this month, the government had reviewed the scheme’s implementation and the release of subsidy payments. Officials had also discussed transparency, coordination with provinces and the financial impact of continuing the programme.
With the subsidy now ending, transport costs may come under renewed pressure. Public transport operators and goods carriers could face higher running costs, which may affect fares and the prices of essential items moved across the country.
Motorcyclists, especially daily wage workers, students and low-income commuters, are also expected to feel the impact as petrol remains a major part of monthly travel expenses.
The government has not announced any replacement relief package so far.
