ISLAMABAD: Government employees across Pakistan are expected to enjoy a four-day holiday break from June 25 to June 28 due to the observance of 9th and 10th Muharram (Ashura) and the following weekend.
According to the Muharram calendar announced after the moon-sighting process, 9th Muharram is expected to fall on Thursday, June 25, while 10th Muharram (Youm-e-Ashura) will be observed on Friday, June 26. Public holidays are expected to be observed on both days, subject to the issuance of the final official notification by the federal government.
With Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, already designated as weekly holidays for most government offices operating on a five-day workweek, employees are likely to benefit from four consecutive days off.
The revised Muharram schedule follows the announcement that Muharram 1448 AH began on June 17 after the moon was not sighted on the expected date. As a result, Ashura-related observances and associated public holidays shifted by one day from the dates initially projected in the annual holiday calendar.
Each year, the federal government traditionally announces public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram to facilitate religious observances, mourning processions, and security arrangements across the country. Government offices, educational institutions, and many public-sector organizations generally remain closed during these days.
Authorities in major cities have also started finalizing security and traffic management plans ahead of Muharram gatherings and processions. Law enforcement agencies are expected to implement special measures to ensure peaceful observance of the sacred month, particularly on the days of Ashura when large numbers of mourners participate in religious events nationwide.
The extended holiday period may also lead to increased travel activity as many employees use the consecutive break for family visits and personal engagements. However, citizens are advised to monitor official announcements for any updates regarding holiday notifications and public service schedules.
Pakistan annually observes Ashura as one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. Religious gatherings, majalis, and processions are held across the country during the first ten days of Muharram.
